Welcome to this instructional guide where I’ll be showing you how to paint a scenic streamside rock using acrylics. This tutorial is primarily focused on the art of painting rocks.

STEP 1. UndeRPAINT THE ROCKS

Let’s start with the foundational step. Using a filbert brush, I’ll guide you through the process of applying a mixture of sap green, burnt umber, and yellow ochre to underpaint the rock. During this stage, remember to keep the brushstrokes short and vary the colors to infuse texture into the rock.

STEP 2. BLOCK IN THE MOSS

Moving on, I’ll enhance the scene by introducing moss. I’ll demonstrate how to apply a mixture of sap green and yellow ochre, creating a vibrant blend that truly brings the moss to life. As the colors seamlessly merge, you’ll notice how they enhance the overall vividness of the scene.

STEP 3. HIGHLIGHT THE MOSS

The next step involves adding highlights to the bushes. Use the corner of a foliage filbert brush, I’ll show you how to apply medium yellow for these highlights. This technique will contribute to the depth and realism of the moss-covered bushes.

STEP 4. darken the rocks

For added depth, I’ll darken the rocks using more burnt umber. Pay close attention to this step, as I’ll guide you in adding intricate details that create the effect of cracks and crevices in the rock’s surface.

STEP 5. underpaint the stream

Load a no. 6 bristle flat with white + purple + ultramatine + a bit of yellow ochre and begin underpainting into the stream

STEP 6. CONTINUE ADDING THE ROCKS

Using the same techniques and color schemes to paint the remaining rocks

STEP 7. HIGHLIGHT THE STREAM

Load a bit of white on the tip of a no. 6 bristle flat and use a drybrush scrubbing technique to paint highlight for the stream

STEP 8. Add details

Concluding the demonstration , I’ll also add subtle details, like tiny grass sprouts growing on the rocks, to infuse the scene with vibrancy.
